Your rainwater tank quietly collects every shower, so it’s easy to forget it too needs a good scrub now and then. Left unchecked, debris and algae can creep in and turn clean water cloudy and even smelly. A simple twice-yearly clean keeps your tank working at its best, to delivers crisp, clear water whenever it’s needed. Follow these steps for a straightforward rainwater tank maintenance routine.
Step 1: Empty and Rinse the Inlet Screen
Pop off the leaf screen or first-flush diverter cover and hose away trapped leaves and grit. If the screen looks cracked or warped, swap it out so only clean rainwater finds its way inside.
Step 2: Drain and Flush Out Sediment
Close the inlet valve and open the bottom outlet tap into a garden bed. Once the level falls below the sediment line, shut the tap and refill just enough to swirl the walls. Repeat draining and rinsing until the water runs clear.
Step 3: Gently Scrub the Interior Walls
If your tank has an access port, don protective gloves and use a long-handled brush with mild soapy water to loosen any algae patches. Avoid harsh chemicals—simple soap and elbow grease do the trick. Rinse again to sweep away loosened residue.
Step 4: Clear Outlet and Overflow Pipes
Remove any mesh strainers and give them a good wash under fresh water. Then flush the pipes with a strong hose stream or a pipe-cleaning brush to dislodge hidden debris.
Step 5: Stick to a Six-Month Schedule
Mark your calendar — a full tank clean every six months keeps water fresh and prevents unwanted smells or contamination.
It’s also a good idea to check your tank after major storms that drop extra debris.
